Terraforming, Water & Saplings Guide: How to Turn Rock Into Forest

Step-by-step Beyond These Stars terraforming guide: how to convert Barren Rock into Fertile Soil, dig glacier water channels, grow Saplings, and expand oxygen.

How Do Biome & Terraforming Rules Work on Kewa?

When you first land on Kewa, only the central valley around her meltwater river is green and breathable. Beyond that lush cradle lies vast stretches of grey Barren Rock where Peeps cannot breathe and farms cannot grow.

Every hex tile on Kewa’s back follows a strict 4-stage ecological state machine:

  1. Barren Rock (Unbuildable / Unbreathable Frontier): Raw carapace stone. Can only hold roads, power lines, or mines if covered by a nearby Forest’s oxygen aura.
  2. Dry Dirt: Created when a Landscaper spreads Compost over Barren Rock.
  3. Fertile Soil (Lush Green): Created automatically when Dry Dirt sits within 4 hex tiles of Water.
  4. Living Watered Forest: Created when a Tree Nursery plants Saplings on Fertile Soil within 4 hexes of Water—projecting a 4-hex Breathable Oxygen Aura and +20% Woodcutter / Fruit Plantation bonus!

The 4-Hex Water & Oxygen Rule Explained

Nearly every ecological interaction in Beyond These Stars revolves around a 4-hex radius:

Ecological Source Radius Effect on Surrounding Hexes What Happens If Source Is Lost?
Fresh Water Tile (River, Pool, Canal) 4 Hexes Converts Dirt → Fertile Green Soil; keeps Forests watered Soil dries to brown Dirt; Forests wither; Oxygen aura collapses
Watered Forest Tile 4 Hexes Creates Breathable Atmosphere for Peeps & buildings; +20% Woodcutter / Fruit Plantation yield Buildings outside 4 tiles lose air and shut down immediately
Cleaner 4 Hexes Scrubs industrial Pollution before the 15-minute Toxic timer expires Pollution degrades Fertile Soil back into Barren/Toxic blight

Step-by-Step Terraforming Loop: From Wood Waste to Forest

To run a continuous terraforming engine without starving your construction stockpiles, connect these three buildings into a closed ecological loop:

Step 1: Harvest Wood Waste for the Composter

Every time your Woodcutter or Sawmill runs, it generates Wood Waste as a secondary by-product (see Resources & By-Product Chains).

  • Build a Composter (6 Planks, 4 Stone; 2 Peeps) right next to your Sawmill’s By-Product Yard.
  • The Composter turns Wood Waste + Organic Waste → Compost continuously with zero pollution.

Step 2: Spread Compost & Dig Channels With the Landscaper

Place a Landscaper (8 Planks, 6 Stone, 4 Tools; 2 Peeps) within 16 hexes of housing (see Peeps Commute Rules) near the barren rock frontier.

  • Assign the Landscaper to Spread Soil (consumes Compost to convert Barren Rock hexes into Dirt).
  • Once you research Hydro-Engineering, use the Landscaper to Dig Water Trenches extending from Kewa’s glacier river pools so every new Dirt hex sits within 4 tiles of Water.

Step 3: Cultivate Saplings in the Tree Nursery

Build a Tree Nursery (8 Planks, 4 Compost, 4 Tools; 2 Peeps) adjacent to your new Fertile green hexes.

  • Supply the Tree Nursery with Water and Compost to grow Saplings.
  • Plant Saplings in 3-hex clusters every 6–7 tiles along your irrigation trench. Within minutes, you will have a self-sustaining Oxygen Corridor stretching all the way to distant mineral veins and Thermal Spires!

Balancing Glacier Meltwater & High-Altitude Valleys

Kewa’s dorsal landscape is divided into distinct elevation zones: the Glacier Peak, Midland River Valleys, Rocky Crags, and Thermal Ridges.

3 Terraforming Mistakes That Kill Colonies
  1. Clear-Cutting Starter Forests Before Unlocking the Tree Nursery: If you chop down the last watered Forest tile near your Huts before researching the Tree Nursery, your oxygen aura vanishes and Peeps suffocate! Always leave at least 3 untouched Forest hexes per district.
  2. Letting Pollution Touch Irrigation Trenches: If an uncleaned Ore Smelter or Cement Factory pollutes a hex adjacent to your forest belt, the trees will wither and shrink your breathable zone (see Pollution & Toxic Area Guide).
  3. Building Landscapers Beyond 16 Hexes of Huts: Frontier terraforming stalls if Peeps cannot commute to the Landscaper. Build a 2-Hut + 2-Potato Patch outpost first (see Building Adjacency Layouts).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I expand breathable air onto Kewa's barren rock hexes?
Breathable atmosphere extends 4 hex tiles outward from any living, watered Forest tile. To expand your buildable zone, channel river water within 4 hexes of the frontier, use a Landscaper with Compost to turn Barren Rock into Dirt (which auto-greens into Fertile soil), and plant Saplings from a Tree Nursery.
How does a Dirt hex become Fertile (Green) soil?
Any Dirt hex located within 4 hex tiles of a fresh Water tile (river, lake, or Landscaper water trench) automatically absorbs moisture and turns into lush Green Fertile soil suitable for farms and forests.
How do I get Compost for terraforming?
Build a Composter and feed it Wood Waste (a by-product of Woodcutters and Sawmills) or organic food waste from farms. Never throw away Wood Waste—every unit converts directly into new soil on Kewa's back.
Why are my Forest trees dying and turning brown?
Forests wither for two reasons: either their water source was blocked/diverted more than 4 hexes away, or nearby industrial Pollution poisoned the soil. Restore irrigation within 4 tiles and place a Cleaner to save dying trees.
Can I dig new rivers from Kewa's glacier?
Yes! Kewa's dorsal glacier feeds natural meltwater rivers. Once you unlock Hydro-Landscaping in the Research Tree, your Landscapers can excavate water channels to route glacier water into dry basins.
