How Are Buildings Classified in Beyond These Stars?

Every structure you place on Kewa’s hexagonal shell—or on distant planetary outposts—balances five core metrics: Construction Cost, Worker Slots (Peeps), Power Demand, Pollution Output, and Hex Adjacency Rules.

4. Industrial Refining & Manufacturing Buildings

Industrial buildings convert raw ores and timber into advanced construction materials while generating By-Products (see Resources & Production Chains) and Pollution (see Pollution & Toxic Area Guide):

5. Power, Storage & Logistics Infrastructure

Check our dedicated Power Grid & Generators Guide for full wattage calculations and Touching Rule blueprints:

Industrial storage tanks, pipe networks, and irrigated hex farms in Beyond These Stars

  • Generators: Burner Generator (20 MW, Medium Pollution, -25% with 4 empty hexes), Wind Turbine (15 MW, Clean), Solar Panel (25 MW, Clean), Fuel Generator (60 MW, High Pollution), Thermal Spire Tap (80 MW, Low Pollution).
  • Grid & Storage: Power Line (1 Copper + 1 Wood), Battery (200 MWh buffer), Warehouse / Storage (stores solid goods), Liquid Tank (stores Water, Fuel, and liquid Chemicals), By-Product Yard (dedicated dump for Soot, Slag, Goo, and Wood Waste so factories never clog).
  • Transport: Dirt Road, Paved Road (faster Peep walking speed), Wooden Bridge, and Metal Bridge (spans rivers and canyons).

6. Terraforming, Ecology & Kewa Care Buildings

Maintaining Kewa’s living biome requires four specialized ecological structures (detailed in our Terraforming Guide and Kewa Care Guide):

  • Composter: Converts Wood Waste, Organic Waste, and By-Products into rich Compost.
  • Landscaper: Uses Compost and Tools to convert Barren Rock into Dirt, dig Water Trenches, and fill hexes.
  • Tree Nursery: Consumes Water and Compost to cultivate Saplings and plant new Forest hexes (expanding your 4-tile breathable oxygen canopy).
  • Cleaner: Consumes 6 MW and 1 Peep to actively scrub Pollution from surrounding hexes before they mutate into Toxic Areas.
  • Cooling Fan: Dissipates heat around Thermal Spires to protect Kewa’s body temperature.

7. Science, Space & Kewa Communication Buildings

Bioluminescent dome structures and advanced research facilities on Kewa’s carapace

Research & Galaxy Exploration Structures
  • Research Lab / Science Dome: Staffed by Peeps to generate Research Points across the 5 technology tabs (Engineering, Biology, Ecology, Space, and Kewa).
  • Strange Transmitter: Unlocked via Kewa research; allows you to communicate navigation requests to Kewa once she trusts your colony.
  • Kewa Feeder: Synthesizes and delivers Kewa Feed to keep the Space Whale nourished during interstellar jumps.
  • Scout Spaceship Pad: Launches Jose’s reconnaissance ship to scan Asteroid Belts, Strange Satellites, and candidate worlds on the Galaxy Map.
  • Cargo Lander / Trade Dock: Transfers Shell, Milk, Eggs, and exotic minerals between Planetary Outposts and Kewa’s back.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many building categories exist in Beyond These Stars?
Buildings are organized into 7 primary functional groups: Accommodation (housing), Food & Agriculture, Resource Extraction, Industrial Refining, Power & Storage Logistics, Terraforming & Kewa Care, and Research & Space Exploration.
Which buildings do not require workers?
Accommodation buildings (Hut, House, Apartment, Homestead), passive infrastructure (Roads, Wooden Bridges, Metal Bridges, Power Lines, Batteries, Warehouses), and Decorations/Parks operate passively without occupying Peep worker shifts.
Why does my Mine or Blast Mine hurt Kewa?
Deep subsurface extraction buildings—specifically Mines and Blast Mines—drill directly into Kewa's rocky carapace, generating both Pollution and localized carapace irritation. Always pair deep mines with Cleaners and Kewa care structures.
What is the difference between a Hut, House, Apartment, and Homestead?
Huts cost basic Wood and house 5 Peeps; Houses require Planks and Stone to house 8 Peeps with higher base happiness; Apartments house 15 Peeps in a compact hex footprint using Steel and Cement; Homesteads provide high-comfort rural housing near agricultural zones.
Which buildings require planetary outpost placements?
While most buildings can be placed on Kewa, specialized extraction and ranching structures like the Trawler (for Shell and Fish), Pasture (for Milk, Eggs, and Meat), and certain exotic mines are primarily operated on planetary outposts discovered via the Galaxy Map.
