What Are the Most Important Hidden Mechanics in Beyond These Stars?

Beyond These Stars layers hexagonal city-building, resource by-product loops, and living-creature symbiosis on top of one another. Many of its most impactful rules—such as wire-free touching conduction, triangle decoration geometry, and the Home Spaceship by-product trap—are easy to miss during your first campaign. Here are 25 verified tips and tricks organized by system.

Tips 1–7: Hex Grid Geometry & Building Adjacency Tricks

  1. The 16-Hex Housing Rule Is Absolute for Workplaces: Peeps will walk 50+ tiles to haul a single plank for construction, but they refuse to staff any workplace more than 16 hex tiles from their home. Always toggle the housing range ring before placing distant mines or landscapers.
  2. Woodcutters Never Chop Down Trees: Do not leave empty space around a Woodcutter thinking it needs room to replant. Surround your Woodcutter with 5 watered Forest tiles and 1 road tile to lock in its permanent +30% storage adjacency bonus.
  3. Coastal Outcroppings Are Made for Water Pumps: Look for peninsula hexes that touch 3 water tiles at once. Placing a Water Pump there grants +30% water storage for free.
  4. Pair Every Early Hut With 2 Potato Patches: Before you unlock Parks or Memorial Statues, placing a Hut adjacent to 2 Potato Patches gives an immediate +20% Happiness bonus AND keeps farm haul distances near zero.
  5. The 3-House Decoration Triangle: A single Decoration buffs every adjacent accommodation. Place 1 Decoration in the center of 3 Houses arranged in a alternating triangle (leaving the other 3 sides for roads and farms) so every single Decoration buffs 15–30 Peeps at once.
  6. The 6-Ring Memorial Statue Hub: Once you unlock the Memorial Statue, place it at the center of a 6-hex ring of Houses or Apartments to maximize its high-tier happiness aura.
  7. Give Burner Generators Breathing Room: Leaving 4 of the 6 hexes around a Burner Generator completely empty (no buildings, no decorations) reduces its pollution output by -25%.

Tips 8–13: Power, Industry & By-Product Management

  1. Chain Early Powered Buildings Without Wires: Before you smelt Copper for Power Lines, place your Ore Smelter and Toolsmith directly touching your Burner Generator (or touching each other while one touches the generator). Electricity conducts across shared building walls! (See Power Grid & Conduction Guide.)
  2. Pause the Home Spaceship to Unlock By-Products: The Home Spaceship produces Wood, Stone, Iron, and Tools with zero secondary by-products. If you need Wood Waste (for Compost), Soot, or Slag, you must pause the ship’s production slots so your specialized buildings do the work.
  3. Never Let By-Products Clog Primary Production: If a Sawmill or Ore Smelter fills its internal storage with Wood Waste or Slag, primary production halts! Build a By-Product Yard or Compost Heap nearby to drain secondary outputs continuously.
  4. Prioritize Wooden Bridge Length Extra in Tech: Kewa’s back is split by rivers, chasms, and elevation ridges. Researching Wooden Bridge Length Extra early shaves 6–10 hexes off Peep commute routes, effectively extending your 16-tile housing reach across rivers.
  5. Keep Tool Stockpiles Above 10 at All Times: Running out of Tools triggers a colony-wide slowdown that delays both construction and resource gathering. Set up a dedicated Toolsmith before Minute 35.
  6. Watch the 15-Minute Toxic Timer: High and Very High pollution buildings (Cement Factory, Battery Plant, Fuel Maker, Metal Smelter) will permanently convert dirty hexes into impassable Toxic Areas if left uncleaned for 15 minutes.

Tips 14–19: Terraforming, Water & Peeps Happiness

  1. Water Revives Dry Forests Automatically: You do not need to chop down Dry Forests and replant them. Digging a Landscaper water trench within 4 hex tiles of a Dry Forest turns it back into an oxygen-producing Watered Forest within seconds.
  2. Fertile Tiles Require Water + Dirt: Grass alone is not enough for high-tier crops. A tile must be within 4 hexes of water AND have Dirt (spread via Landscaper using Compost) to achieve fertile status.
  3. Plant Fruit Plantations Next to Watered Forests: Any Fruit Plantation within 4 tiles of a watered Forest receives a permanent +20% yield boost.
  4. Cooked Meals Beat Raw Crops by 3× to 4×: Raw Potatoes restore only 50 Happiness / 50 Exhaustion, whereas cooked Meals from a Kitchen restore 200 Happiness / 200 Exhaustion and Smoothies restore 160 / 160. Transition to Kitchens as soon as your population passes 40 Peeps.
  5. Strikes Last 3 Full Shifts: If a Peep’s Happiness hits zero, they go on Strike for 3 consecutive shifts, refusing all work while still consuming housing space. Check our Peeps Happiness & Strikes Guide for recovery tables.
  6. Low Energy Causes Sickness: Peeps whose Energy drops critically low become Sick, requiring treatment at a Doctor’s Office before they can return to work.

Tips 20–25: Kewa Care, Strange Transmitter & Galaxy Outposts

  1. Clear Thorny Stems Immediately: Thorny Stems act like parasites on Kewa’s hide, draining Kewa’s Health and Happiness. Assign workers to clear them as soon as your breathable zone reaches them.
  2. Kewa Will Ignore You If Hungry or Hot: The Strange Transmitter only requests a travel direction—it does not mind-control Kewa. If Kewa is hungry or overheated, Kewa will autonomously detour into Debris Fields (which pelt your city with meteors) or cold sectors. Read our Kewa Care & Strange Transmitter Guide.
  3. Research Kewa Feed Before Long Jumps: Feeding Kewa via dedicated Kewa Feed facilities keeps Whale Energy high so Kewa follows your Strange Transmitter coordinates reliably.
  4. Only Scout Inside the Blue Galaxy Border: Jose’s Scout Spaceship can only explore stars and anomalies inside the blue explorable boundary on the Galaxy Map.
  5. Use Planetary Outposts for Shell, Milk, and Eggs: Several resources (Shell for Cement, Milk, Eggs, Berries) require planetary outposts or specialized biome colonies off Kewa’s back. See Resources & Production Chains and Galaxy Outposts Guide.
  6. Balance Surplus via the Trade Center: Use the Trade Center barter slider to trade renewable timber, planks, or surplus fruit for rare outpost minerals whenever your local veins run dry.
Summary: Top 5 Mistakes to Avoid
  1. Placing Mines or Landscapers >16 tiles from the nearest Hut.
  2. Leaving Home Spaceship tasks running after building dedicated Woodcutters and Smelters (starving yourself of Wood Waste and Slag).
  3. Letting High Pollution sit uncleaned for 15 minutes until it turns into a Toxic Area.
  4. Relying on raw Potatoes past 40 Peeps instead of upgrading to Bread, Smoothies, and Meals.
  5. Ignoring Kewa’s Hunger and Temperature before entering a Debris Field sector.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Woodcutters destroy forest tiles over time?
No. Unlike traditional city-builders where lumber camps clear-cut trees, Woodcutters in Beyond These Stars sustainably harvest timber from adjacent watered Forest hexes without destroying them—and gain +30% storage when surrounded by 5 Forest tiles.
How do you get the maximum buff from a single Decoration or Memorial Statue?
Place a Decoration on a vertex/central hex surrounded by a triangle of 3 Houses to buff all 3 buildings simultaneously, or surround a Memorial Statue with a ring of 6 Accommodations to multiply Peep happiness across 30+ citizens.
Why are my Peeps getting sick even when food and water are full?
Peep sickness is triggered either by working/living on polluted hexes or by extreme exhaustion when their Energy drops near zero. Build a Doctor's Office within 16 tiles of housing and place Cleaners near industrial zones.
Can Kewa die from pollution or mining?
While Kewa will not permanently die and end your game immediately, low Kewa Health and Happiness cause Kewa to ignore your Strange Transmitter navigation orders and veer into hazardous Debris Fields that bombard your city.
What is the fastest way to get Shell and Cement?
Shell cannot be mined in Kewa's starting valley; you must establish a coastal/planetary Trawler or trade via your Spaceport/Trade Center, then refine Shell + Stone + Clay inside a Cement Factory.
